Roots, first series
I remembered viewing the television series and was captivated by it. Having the entire episodes to view over and over again is a bonus. It is a tremendous tale of one family's struggle for freedom and civil rights. Alex Haley has done a significant public service.

The Gulag Archipelago, a masterpeice.
I always wanted to read this masterpiece and now I have the time. It is truly compelling. It is depressing at times to realize man's inhumanity to man. The Russia which is described and the atrocities perpetuated are on a par with Hitler's holocaust.

The Ghosts Behind the Presidents
The book goes behind the scenes and gives one a study of the people behind the speeches of the presidents, from FDR to George W. Bush. The origins of some of the great lines in the speeches are revealed, such as Reagan's, "Tear down that Wall". The book is informative but one can get lost in all of the names and detail.
