This is a VERY nice watch for the money!
This is a VERY nice watch for the money! If you're looking for something comparable to a Rolex Submariner or an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, look elsewhere. That said, if you're looking for a nice tool watch that serves an intended purpose, and one that you won't cry into your hands over if you bang it into something during your daily whatever, then this may be the watch for you.
I've always longed over automatic watches and the lure of sheer mechanical genius they bring with them. On the other hand, I'm also obsessed with accuracy...something one doesn't easily find in the auto or self-wind world, save for the most expensive spring drive watches that most of us average-salary folks can't justifiably afford. Enter the world of quartz.
I own several Seiko quartz watches (yes, I'm one of those die-hard Seiko fans) and love them all, but when I have to send my SBBN013 (Darth Tuna) in for dismantling just to change the battery, it can be frustrating. Or, if I just want to wear something a little less assuming then a hockey puck on my arm, then the Seiko SNE589 is one of my favorite go-to watches.
The SNE589 is powered by a solar-powered quartz movement, with a rated accuracy of +/- 1 second per month and a boasted 10-month power reserve when fully charged. Folks, that's pretty damned hard to beat, and it means there's never any battery to change, as well. Combine that with classic dive-watch styling, 200m of water resistance, a modest 42.8mm case, a pancake-thin 10.7mm thickness, sapphire crystal, 120-click uni-directional bezel, hacking function, screw-down crown and case back, drilled lugs, and a [very easy to find aftermarket bands for] 20mm lug width, all with the known quality of a Seiko, and you have one hell of a watch. The metal bracelet, as with most all Seiko watches (save for the most expensive Seiko and Grand Seiko watches), leaves something to be desired. That said, it performs its intended purpose well and will not let you down in the function area. However, after a quick swap to a nice Seiko or aftermarket strap, or to an always solid and tried-true Uncle Seiko metal bracelet, you will never look back. Oh, and with regard to the ever-polarizing topic of Seiko's quality control and bezel alignment issues that plagues the chat boards, the bezel for the watch I received is spot-on for alignment, and most of the chatter I've seen about this model has indicated the same experience from other owners, so fear not.
Even at the SNE589's suggested retail price of $525 (USD), you would have one hell of a deal. But, the reality is they are being had for more in the ~$400 (USD) price range new, with the occasional great deal on a pre-owned unit popping up, like the almost-new one I grabbed for a mere $225, making this watch a STUPENDOUS deal in my book! Don't like the black bezel model? No worries, it also comes in a model with a blue dial and blue bezel (SNE585), or in the ever-famous Pepsi model, with A black dial and red/blue bezel (SNE591). Take my word for it and check out this model today; the only thing you'll regret is that you didn't buy one sooner!
By the way, I’m in no way affiliated with Seiko; I’m just giving you the honest opinion of a man who’s spent his own hard-earned money on this (and other watches). That said…hey, Seiko (or any other brand, for that matter)…if you want me to do an honest review on your watches, I’d be more than happy to do so!
