eero Home Wi-Fi Router (1 eero 2 eero Beacons) 2nd Generation - White
    Jan 07, 2018
The best wifi system I've ever used
We were considering Google's new wifi system, but on the advice of a colleague who is an IT expert, we chose eero instead. We made the right decision. eero is awesome. Setup is super easy, and it's by far the most reliable and most stable wifi system I have ever used. My application is a two story house at roughly 2,000 square feet, and roughly a dozen devices, with a regular flow of guests. After a couple of months I haven't once had a dead spot, freeze, dropped connection, etc. I had those regularly with my old Netgear wifi router. The eero matrix makes wifi more widely available throughout the entire house, as well as outside on my deck where I need it to sync to my golf flight monitor. Another issue that eero has fixed for me is the chronic issues my iOS devices had connecting to my previous Netgear network. Most iOS devices, including at least one iPhone and two iPads, constantly disconnected from our network. The only way to reconnect was to reenter the wifi network name and password every time. With eero we have never had a device drop off the network. The device management features allows you to block devices from the network or reenable them at a tap of the screen. Sharing the guest network is a breeze through sms, email or scanning the QR code. Making changes to the network is incredibly easy. Renaming the network, changing the password, etc. are trivial through the app. Doing those things on a typical wifi network can be an incredibly frustrating experience. Admin with eero is like it's portrayed in sci-fi movies, you can walk around the house tapping settings on your phone without even having to put down your cocktail. Family profiles allow you to pause the network for specific devices at specific times, potentially useful as our little brats get older and will eventually start to use the network. I haven't delved into the advanced network settings, but it looks like there's enough detail and features to satisfy even moderately complex network needs. This system is so good I'm considering using it at my business as well. Thank you eero for making wifi a pleasure to use. This is the Apple of wifi systems, it just works. All the time.

Powermatic 1791310 Model PM701 3/4 HP Benchtop Deluxe Mortiser New

Great product, setup and usage are critical for accuracy
I'm new to woodworking so keep that in mind when reading my review. This mortiser is very sturdy and quite heavy, and is expensive relative to other units, but user reviews on numerous tool retailer websites support that this is the market leader. My philosophy is to buy the best tool you can afford, and pass it down to your kids. The unit is strong and stable, and setup is quick and easy. I've been using it to cut 3/8" mortises in hard maple, and the first cut takes 3-4 plunges, but the remaining cuts can be done with a single plunge (with brand new sharp chisel bits at least). The mortiser comes with a conical sharpening stone to keep the square chisel sharp, which is a nice bonus. Most of the adjustment screws come with spring loaded adjustments so the orientation of the lever can be moved around, which is also nice. The table and fence are rock solid and accurate. At first I was a bit worried that the fence wouldn't set square to the table (therefore square to the chisel bit), because the clampdown screws have some play when they're not clamped down. But after adjusting the fence and clamping down the levers, the fence sits perfectly square to the miter gauge slots. A nice addition would be a micro adjuster on the fence adjustment, which is pretty coarse. But I admit that the cut tolerance is impacted so much by placement of the workpiece against the fence, and other factors, that a micro adjuster might be overkill. The fence can be tapped into place without using the adjustment knobs, so with experience the setup can be accurate enough that it exceeds any error caused by bit vibration or flex in the bit/motor as it's pressed into hardwood. The tool is surprisingly quiet. It's the only tool in my shop that I can run and still hear my music. I ran into three operational issues, which are probably due to my own inexperience, but may help others to learn from my mistakes. First, one of my first mortise cuts broke through the workpiece. I set up the depth stop correctly, but over the first few mortises the depth stop slipped and the cut got deeper and deeper until it broke through the workpiece ruining the piece (a personal lesson in waste and the importance of Lean manufacturing, but I digress). I didn't realize this as it was happening so that's a lesson learned. I think this was caused by my repeatedly bottoming out the handle firmly during each cut to ensure that I obtained the correct depth. It's hard to tell when the depth stop is reached, especially for the first cut in hardwood, because the piece provides a fair amount of resistance. My fix (my wife's brilliant suggestion) was to put a piece of masking tape on the chisel bit to mark the desired depth (in addition to setting the stop), and watch to make sure I'm not exceeding the tape line with each cut. That solved the problem. I didn't experiment with screwing down the depth stop more firmly, the handles are plastic and I've learned the hard way that over tightening has downsides. The second issue I ran into is that the hold-down clamp doesn't release easily after loosening the clamping screws after my cut. It seems to bind a bit on the auger screw, so I solve this by rotating the clamp slightly back and forth on the workpiece to release the pressure, then the clamp easily slides back up the screw. A third issue is that the guide wheels that hold the workpiece against the fence work great as long as both are in contact with the workpiece. But when making cuts toward the end of the piece, the piece may only come into contact with one of the wheels, and toward the very end may only come into contact with one half of the fence since the end of the piece ends up in the fence gap. The lesson is to make sure that the workpiece is held firmly against the fence as it's moved along the length of the cut, especially once it clears the second wheel. I don't have a framework for comparison, because I haven't used other mortisers. But this has met my expectations and I expect it will be a staple of my woodshop from here on out.
