This book can change your life
Let me tell you: I was prepared to write a so-so review of this book. Yes, Taubes makes a compelling and detailed and understandable argument about the role of carbohydrates (carbs) in our metabolism and as a root cause of our exploding obesity and diabetes epidemic. He also attacks the current “calories in/calories out” ethic as misguided, illogical, and simply unsupported by fact. He argues, persuasively, that counting calories is no more a solution to controlling your girth than pretending it can control your height or bust size. And, surprisingly, this is not new thinking: he cites studies and observations going back not just decades, but centuries, that controlling carbs in your diet will prevent obesity. All good stuff, but “get on with it” I found myself thinking. What do we do about it already?!? Now I understand something: Taubes is not trying to win an argument, he is trying to change your way of thinking. And, I think I understand why. The “calories-in/calories-out, bread and grain and fruit is best, all-calories-are-equal” way of thinking is pervasive and defended like religious dogma. I personally was skeptical, despite his logic, facts, and detailed reasoning. But that was three weeks (and 10 pounds lost) ago. The real epiphany came when I was in a checkout line, waiting for the cashier to get a price check on my cabbage. Behind me was a pretty, 20-something blonde woman. As I waited, I watched her put her groceries on the counter: two packs of sugary drinks, bread, cereal, some chips, and then multiple food products with “low-fat” and “reduced-fat” on the labels (I’ve since learned the fat in most cases is replaced with corn syrup). No meat. No cheese. This pretty young blond looked to weigh better than 300 pounds. I won’t soon forget that image. Moreover, the concept of obese people as slothful and lacking willpower is gone, replaced by the knowledge that these are folks with a condition, one that is treatable. The information in this book will help them, and you, to change your way of thinking, too, and just maybe change your life.

Stanley 25 Foot Powerlock Tape Measure 33-425 Made in USA

    Repeat customer.
This is my second one purchased. I wore out the tape on the first one I purchased many years ago, and replaced it with a new tape and keep it at my vacation home for projects there. The spring and lock mechanism still work great. Well made solid product. Easy to read tape is great for guys whose eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be.

I love ridin' with the top down!
I purchased a 2007 A4 2.0T Cabriolet (convertible) with quattro all wheel drive. I never owned a convertible in my life until I bought this one. I love it! It looks great, just a bunch of fun to ride around in. For those worrying about 'ragtops' and the mechanism reliability, trust me: this one is solid. My vehicle has the navigation option, which is excellent. The 2007 navigation was the redesign of 2006 (which had not very good reviews). I rented a Mercedes S-Class in 2011 that had practically the same design, so there you go. This vehicle has a six-speed transmision with the 'tiptronic' shift on the fly option. It is very good, very responsive. If you want performance from this car, you should be using it. This is a 4900 lbs. (!) roadster with only a 2 liter engine (turbo helps), so if you want to sport around town or just accelerate quickly and smoothly into highway traffic, this is the way to go. I read some reviews about this car that noted a hesitation when slowing down at an intersetion then trying to accelerate. I don't notice this, but never when using the tiptronic. Handling is very responsive; all-wheel drive will do that. The suspension is tight (note: not bumpy) which I have found somewhat typical of German motorcars. It also sits fairly low to the ground (also typical of this class of German motor car in my experience). The 4900 lbs. vehicle weight really shows up in highway driving. It is smooth! Let's face it: this car was built to drive 200+ km/hour on the Autobahn. At high speeds, you don't expect it to turn into a rattletrap or bob and weave like a yacht on the high seas. Like I said, it's tight. Let's talk about safety. First, with its mass, its not gonna get pushed around. There are no blind spots when driving or backing up, top up or down. It's got the basics: seat belts and airbags. For those wondering what happens to passengers should the car rollover, there are dual deployable pillars between the back seat and trunk that pop up like a roll bar to protect occupants. There's also those bright white focused headlights and fog lights so visibility is great. And there are brakes. When you look up the phase "stop on a dime" you won't see these because they already stopped at about 4 cents. You want to stop---you will stop, cleanly, at whatever speed (remember: Autobahn driving). I read that the FSI engine is an oil burner. So far, have seen that a little. I'm sticking with full synthetic (Mobil 1 or equivalent) at suggestion of a mechanic friend (something about the turbo makes this a good choice). I am over six feet tall and over 240 lbs. Plenty of head room and shoulder room for me. The center console is a little wide for the space, so my right leg is always against it. I see a lot of complaints about this in reviews, but honestly it feels fine. If you are used to swinging your knees unencumbered in the driver's space, this will require an adjustment, but despite my size and leg length, it has been an easy one. The car sits low as I mentioned and it sometimes feels like I'm falling in and climbing out. For those with physical ailments that would make this difficult, you better test drive one to see if it is a problem. Seats, however, are very comfortable, even on long drives. Looking forward to winter. No top down, but with quattro, no worries in the snow. And I can't wait to try out those heated seats!
