Annotated Christmas Carol [ Dickens, Charles ] Used - Good

Lots of information about a classic
I was recently in a production of A Christmas Carol (I played Marley's ghost), and I wondered about whether our script was true to the original. When I read the original, I found that most of the dialog was close to the original, but I still had questions. The annotated version answered my questions about the language and customs of the time, and has given me much, much more to think about. I was lucky to find a used copy in decent shape for a relatively low price (under $10). I've seen them advertised for much, much more, but if you look long and hard, you can find one that won't break your bank.

A fun book for anyone interested in early rock & roll.
I saw this book when in came out, back in the eighties, and thought it sounded like a lot of fun. I didn't really come of age until the doo-wop era was pretty well over, but I liked the idea -- music where the harmony was the most interesting part. I always kind of kicked myself for not buying the book when I saw it the first time.
I've bought other music books on eBay, so one day, just for the heck of it, I decided to look for this one. Sure enough, there it was, and no one else was bidding. I picked it up for the minimum bid, and a few days later I had it in my hands.
The book IS a lot of fun -- much of it is devoted to doo-wop history and doo-wop trivia. And it's hillarious to see some of the doo-wop lyrics written out (for instance, the song "Get a Job" starts out "yip-yip-yip-yip-BOOM"). But the music itself is tricky. If you don't already know the songs, and you're not used to singing harmony, it's hard to figure out what the songs should sound like. Also, even with songs you know, it's hard to sing them by yourself. It really takes a foursome to get the effect.
This is a fun book for anyone who is nostalgic about early rock & roll, but it would probably be most useful to a band with multiple vocalists wanting to expand their repertoire.

The Whole Ballet
Usually, when you see recordings of the Nutcracker, they feature the Nutcracker Suite -- the overture, the march, and several of the dances from the second act. This is the whole ballet -- the party, the battle, everything. The CD was packaged in a cardboard folder, rather than a plastic jewel box, and the artwork is a little odd (a photo of a wind-up toy dog with a ball), but the price was good, and the quality of the recording is excellent. This is the version I'll be listening to next Christmas and for years to come.
