Finding this album was like reconnecting with your best childhood friend.
This was the first record album I ever picked out myself, way back when.Finding out that it had been released on CD was something of a rush;I'd listened to that old mono LP to the point of near memorization, but where do you find a phonograph these days?
The transfer to CD is outstanding for the original album cuts;crystal clear and well balanced between dialog and background music.While I understand the reasons for adding the extra tracks(the original album is rather short), I do not feel that they really add to the overall package.This is mostly due to technical problems. The background music overwhelms the dialog on several tracks.Also, being very familiar with the original album, the new material feels kind of like meeting relatives for the first time;you don't really know them, but you have the feeling that you're supposed to like them, even if you don't.
Nimoy's performance is strong, for the most part. He can actually carry a tune, unlike his buddy Shatner, though he doesn't have a very broad range. The songs that work best for him stay within that range. When he tries to go high he gets into trouble. That being said, I will admit that I find myself singing along with the 3 songs from the original album, my own range being, if anything, even narrower than Nimoy's.
Was I glad to find and purchase this disc? Absolutely. It represents a big part of my younger life, and I just like having access to it again. And I absolutely believe the version of the original Trek theme presented here to be THE BEST available...PS
