The Grim Reaper : The Life and Career of a Reluctant Warrior by Stu Grimson
    Feb 01, 2022
Thoughtful Reminisces of an NHL Enforcer
Stu Grimson is now a bi-weekly fixture on NHL network whose thoughts and commentary are intelligent and interesting. It's not easy to reconcile what he once was - an Enforcer in hockey's earlier times - with the thoughtful person he is on TV. This book is, essentially, an autobiography of his life in the NHL. His role was to protect his teammates and deliver violent justice to any opponent who would be deserving. He speaks off the others who played this role in the league for their teams, players like Bob Probert, Tie Domi, and Dave Brown among many others, and his confrontations with them, some wins and some losses. (For videos, check YouTube as it has many, many videos of hockey fights in the old days.) Now, if you follow NHL hockey, it's tempting to dismiss these Enforcers as "Goons" as the primary role they played was a violent one that's been eliminated, for the most part, in the current NHL. But, Mr. Grimson's book is highly thoughtful, as he reminisces that the role he played was one of violence, but seems to wonder "What if" as he believes he might have been more like a Phil Esposito type player, an offensive big man who might have been more of a scorer. But, he expresses no regrets for what he did, what his teams paid him to do and to be. After hockey, he got his college degree, then a law degree and is now a practicing attorney, so he is, demonstrably, an intelligent and thoughtful man, a "reluctant warrior" as the book title says. It's an easy read, it follows his life chronologically, and it's a feast of "old time hockey" as the Hanson brothers (as in "Slap Shot") might say. Personally, I find the most entertaining story is the one how he got into Canadian Junior hockey, when on a Friday night, he was going to a movie with 2 of his buddies, all 3 wearing their High school letter jackets downtown. 3 oilfield workers started giving them a hassle and Stu delivered a powerful right hand to one worker's face, laid him out cold, and it just so happened that the coach of the local team was driving by to witness it. The coach found out Grimson had delivered this street justice and, one thing led to another, and Stu's career was off and running. It's an interesting read for any hockey fan and, for a non-fan, it just might pique an interest in the sport and its history. I highly recommend it.

Inexpensive, Fun, and Accurate Air Rifle
I bought a Daisy 901, used, several years ago on eBay and it's accurate and extremely enjoyable to shoot. It digests any and all pellets I've tried but the RWS and H&N seem to work the best. I do not use a scope as most of my activity is simply plinking cans in the back yard at about 25 yards and I adjusted the open sights to be spot on. I have too many air rifles of various calibers but I find that the springers and nitro pistons are heavy and accuracy is difficult to obtain unless I use a rest. But the 901 is easy to operate and pleasant to shoot and I do not have to deal with recoil. I do not use BBs, only pellets as I do not wish to compromise the rifling and, as the loading port is small, I also use a large tweezer to drop in the pellet, something I would advise for this rifle to avoid frustration in loading. One thing I will also mention is the "fun factor" as this is a lot of FUN to shoot. It's light but solid, accurate, inexpensive, and fun to shoot. I'm 71 now and shooting this makes me feel like a kid again. Just my $0.02.

Animal Farm: 1984 by George Orwell
    Jul 05, 2023
    Prescient Book, Classic Orwell
If there are 2 books that should be required reading for all citizens of any country, Animal Farm and 1984 are the 2. 1984 seems eerily prescient about the modern world in which we live, a world where a central government controls every facet of peoples' lives. Winston Smith is the protagonist and works in the Ministry of Truth where his job is to eliminate from history anything that may disagree with the accepted governmental thought. 1984 was originally written as a warning of what might or could happen, but it seems it's being used as a planning template by many governments nowadays. Orwell's writing is simple but taut and the reader will find many quotable passages here. The second book in this volume is Animal Farm, a wicked satire of Marxism/Communism and it's also a very enjoyable read. 2 books in 1 volume, an excellent addition to any home library.
