I like sci-fi 1st encounter aliens books.
There are many, but no others that I've read, hit with sudden humour like Scalzi's does.
His first book, and I continued to read all I could get.
This has a mixed bag in it; aliens, a Hollywood connection, the stars, a dog dies,( he was old and left painlessly), smells, secrecy, the holocaust, medical emergencies, and sudden humour galore !
Bought copies for other people.

Alfa Dog Enzo
If ever a book compelled me to fight off sleep while reading in bed; this is it.
Garth Stein through Enzo his dog, sees a lot, smells with wisdom, and wishes his paws had a thumb.
As a super companion, he diligently seeks to be a good dog, and understand what is going on, and what's next with Denny, and his family.
I would laugh suddenly, cry and blow my nose. Recover, and repeat.
The most recommended book I could ever recommend.
Loved it.
I have read it twice now, and cherish a personal copy with the red scarf and goggles, which I loan out occasionally..
It was also a gift to a friend.
