Teach Your Child that He Can't Do Anything Right
I was disappointed with the message of the text of this book. The child has one failure after another. Really, is this what we need to teach our children-that they can't do anything right. Upon reading the second time, I tried to redeem the message by emphasizing positive values like the kid's persistence and the father's patience and acceptance, but overall was appalled by the negative messages inherent in this script. The Little Engine that Could or The Happy Man and His Dump Truck are much more positive and affirming for a child than this book. I bought it because it was at a level appropriate for my grandchild and I know Mercer Mayer's higher level books and illustrations are enjoyed by somewhat older children. However, I will be certain to read all of the text, not just the title, before buying any more children's books.
