LSI 8888ELP - Excellent RAID Performance, Graphical BIOS RAID Setup
The LSI 8888ELP RAID card is an excellent SATA-II card. More than fast enough for any set of platter drives you can use with it. The SATA-II spec provides 3GB/s bus speed while your maximum platter hard drive throughput is a sustained ~123MB/s (for 10,000 RPM Drives). Even with all 8-ports under full load, this card provides all the throughput you will ever need unless you switch to SSD drives. (that is the only place SATA-III makes a difference) The graphical configuration interface is simple to use plus you have full control over the card and drives from the command-line via MegaCLI. While this is an older card, it is a great choice. Most cards currently on the marked come without a BBU (battery backup unit) used to provided backup for the data in the cache in the event of a power-outage. Without one, you should limit cache setting to 'write-through' to protect against cache loss. (unless you are continually saturating your drive I/O, this is of little to no consequence for all but enterprise level use) It works with Linux and VMware ESXI out of the box (I haven't tested with windows, but no reason the results would be any different). All in all, this is a lot of card for the price today.

Nvidia GTX 980 - Great Value and Great Gaming
The GTX 980 has a memory bandwidth of 224 Gb/sec. which is better than the 1060 and rivals the 1070 (non-TI version). The squirrel-cage type fan is much quieter and much longer lived than the normal multiple side mounted fans. (that's why your home A/C uses a squirrel-cage type blower fan as well) I have purchased a pair of these to replace aging GTX 460's
