    A great little phone!
The Motorola V195 (available in gray) and the almost-identical V195s (available in blue) are fantastic, inexpensive, capable phones. They are quad-band GSM, so if they are unlocked, you can use them almost anywhere in the world. They tend to have a long battery life, a crisp, clear, color screen, and buttons that are big enough for pudgy fingers to push. There is no camera, so you won't have to leave it behind where cameras are prohibited, and you won't need to worry about your kids running up big bills (and maybe attracting unwanted attention) sending pictures back and forth. The one thing I like best is the non-slip finish on the case. This phone is actually hard to drop! Watch out for these minor issues: 1. The phone can use several different batteries of different capacities, and counterfeit batteries are readily available. Stick with a real Motorola battery if at all possible - either the BT-50 or the slightly higher capacity BT-60. Both fit without needing to swap the battery door. 2. Motorola has released information about counterfeit wall chargers and car chargers. Stick with OEM chargers, and compare them to the Motorola counterfeit alert. 3. These phones are no longer manufactured. Those that are for sale "new" are old stock, or sometimes demos. You might not get like-new performance out of a battery that has been on the shelf for a couple of years.

    Small and solid
The HP Elitebook 820 G1 probably does not lead the market in any one feature, but it is a well-balanced, very effective solution. It could be a bit smaller if it were to be considered ultraportable. But it is small enough to be easy to carry around. The screen, which is a bit larger than most ultraportables, is large enough that my old eyes can decipher what it shows. The weight is good, but unremarkable. The construction, though, is impressive - it appears to have a magnesium-alloy frame and every component is well-attached to it. The battery is a bit unusual - it has been shaped to fit the rather limited internal space. As a result, there are not as many aftermarket batteries available as there are for other HP notebooks. And, for those of us who like to use docking stations, this unit is fully compatible with HP's D9Y32AA dock. All in all, it is a good, reasonably-powerful, easy-to-tote notebook computer, and it should meet my needs for quite a few years.
ZTE WF721 AT&T Wireless Home Phone Base

    Effective but lazy
If you have good signal for AT&T or T-Mobile in your area, you can set up one of these ZTE WF721 Wireless Home Phone Bases to replace your landline, and save a whole bunch of money every month. You will still be able to use your home phones - especially if you have a cordless system consisting of one base and multiple handsets. You can even still use your home answering machine. You may ask... Why would I bother with such a home phone base if I can just get another cell phone? Well, I'll tell you... If your mother is over 80 years old and has used the same home phones for the past 20 years, she might not welcome a change in technology. But this change in technology can be made almost invisible to her. She can keep the same phone number. She can keep the same phones. She can keep the same answering system. And (this is the great part) ... she can lose the very expensive landline phone bill. It is worth checking with various cell phone carriers. Consumer Cellular, for example, has a talk-only plan that might be about 15 bucks per month. Others might have good deals also. They are very likely to be well below the current price of your local landline. You may also ask... What if the power goes off? Well, these devices have a backup battery, so they will continue to work for a while during a power outage. However, your cordless phone that is connected to it probably will NOT work during a power outage, so keep a traditional phone around for emergencies. You may also ask... Why did I say that the device is lazy? It is somewhat like your teenager. You tell him to go take the trash out, and sometime in the next week, the trash will be taken out (if your teenager is reasonably well-behaved). Likewise, with this device, you tell it to make a call, and sometime (within a handful of seconds) it will comply. It is not quite as instant as you might expect. Likewise, incoming calls get delayed for a little while before they connect. But once they do connect, they work about as well as a cell phone does. Also note that these devices are locked to the AT&T network. They can be unlocked very inexpensively, and will then work on other GSM networks like T-Mobile.
