Interesting but Some Disappointing Content
This was an interesting book. However, having working in an adoption agency for many years, I found that her backgound is not unique. She seemed surprised that her birth parents did not live up to her expectations. Someone should have told her there is usually a very good reason why people give children up for adoption or why children are removed from parents in other cases and put up for adoption. Many times (but not always) they are dysfunctional people. I found it unfortunate that the author, being a professional person, did not have more insight into what kind of people her birth parents were, and that she did not show them more compassion. I think she regreted later when her mother died and she was no longer able to talk with her and ask questions about her life. Instead, she had to learn about her from boxes of possessions and papers. I feel she should have been the better person and visited her birth mother in the beginning and tried to get to know her and about her life before judging her and shutting her out of her life. It is a bit of a "poor me" story indulging the author when she was the one who had the best advantages in life and had a successful career, and it would seem she should have been the most well adjusted and understanding of others. However, this was a good story and I'm sure it expressed the author's true feelings which I do admire. If she was weak in the area of compassion, she admitted it. The strong negative I found in the book was in only one small section of the book, and that is when the author chose to use the word "ass" and the "F.." word several times on just a couple of pages in what I found to be a very unnecessary and inappropriate manner. No where else in the book did she use cuss words nor inappropriate words, so I found it very shocking and offensive to suddenly find these words in what I thought was going to be a high-class, touching story. I will not recommend this book to anyone nor pass it on to anyone because of the use of these words. I was extremely disappointed that she stooped so low as to use these gutter words in what otherwise would have been a quality book about her understanding of her past as an adoptive child. Were it not for these words, I would otherwise recommend this book to adopted children as an example of one person's journey in finding their biological parents, and perhaps they can learn lessons on using the time they have to get to know their parents before it is too late if they want questions answered, and also as a lesson in how to have more compassion and understanding. I am still mystified as to why she felt it necessary to throw in unseemly words, seeminly out of nowhere - ???
