A timely account about a great Rabbi and General well worth getting and reading g
This autobiography is actually a collection of essays and accounts by Rabbi Shlomo Goren, the first Chief Chaplain of the Israeli Army who was also a front line soldier in Israel's pre-state military force , the Hagana. He rose in rank to Brigadier General in the IDF and advanced to Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv and ultimately Chief Rabbi of Israel. Rabbi Goren was a strict adherent to, and a brilliant decision of, the Halacha, which is the system of Rabbinic rules developed over millennia and followed, to varying degrees and some diverse practices, by Jewish communities throughout the world. The rabbi was also a brilliant Talmudic scholar and innovator in deciphering Halachic sources to meet the exigencies of practicing Jews in modern society. Rabbi Goren inspired both loyal devotion, including that of the astute compiler of the stories in this book, and the intense hostility by strict construction Rabbis who invariably were his his inferiors in both scholarship and intellectual capacity. This is a compelling and well-presented autobiography worth reading g that also contains some wonderful archival photos of Rabbi Goren with great historical Israeli figures -- all of whom were his colleagues and very restful of him, and many of whom were also his close friends -- including David Ben Gurion, Menachem Begin and Generals Moshe Dayan, Yitzchak Rabin and Ariel Sharon.
