NEW & SEALED Linksys WRT1200AC AC1200 Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Wireless Router

WRT1200AC for DD-WRT
This replaced a NetGear FVS318G which had good hardware but flaky firmware. It would arbitrarily stop giving out DHCP addresses. I wanted to use DD-WRT, so although I didn't want Wi-Fi (I have a separate access point) I had to get a router with Wi-Fi that was DD-WRT compatible. This filled the bill. My only complaint is that it has only four LAN ports, but just about all current routers have that limit, especially Wi-Fi ones. I powered it up with original firmware (which is probably fine) long enough to flash DD-WRT firmware in it. That also worked fine. One of the other frustrations about the FV318 was how long it took to initialize (well over a minute). This one with DD-WRT is ready to play in a few seconds. A major improvement. Also, some routers require a reboot to change any parameters. Neither the 318 or this one with DD-WRT does, which is useful as I sometimes create temporary port forwards and don't want the whole LAN to go down every time I add or remove one. It's appearance is a bit "consumer" for my application, particularly since that makes it a little bigger and bulkier than the other network devices in the stack. But the plastic feet do provide better air circulation, which is a good idea. I coexists with a cable modem, VPN router, two switches, a USB hard drive an ISDN modem (and a spare backup) as well as a video security controller and a Linux file server. The LAN also includes a Wi-Fi access point, half a dozen Windows and Linux computers, a LAN based printer, and a couple of Android phones so it is kept busy at times.

Compact camera with good zoom range and reasonably fast lens - affordable
Too recent to evaluate image quality, but it came well recommended. It has a "faster" lens than the two models that followed it, which is why I bought it. It is almost too small. Just about all cameras of this type now lack an optical viewfinder, which is unfortunate, because there are situations where an optical viewfinder is significantly more useful. Large LCD. 10X zoom was welcome. This camera was factory refurbished. This is often a good way to get more value for the money, and in this case to get this model instead of its inferior successors. It looked and operated like new. Good value for the money.

Max Keyboard Clear Keycaps, Cherry MX Switch, Rubber O-Ring PRO Sampler Kit

What keyswitches do you want?
It seems widely acclaimed that mechanical switches are the best for serious typing and for gaming. I'm not a gamer, but I earn a living at a keyboard and I'm thinking I'm getting tired of rubber switches. Finding samples of mechanical switches at local stores is difficult. My local Best Buy had about four gaming keyboards. The only one with Cherry MX switches had Red ones, and I know I don't want that. From reading reviews, I thought I might want Brown. But then maybe Blue was what I really craved. This device allowed me to answer that. It isn't an objectively better or worse situation. It is very personal. The final keyboard would most likely have to be ordered, and they are expensive enough to not want to guess wrong. Also without trying it, how does one know what imact the rubber washers make on sound (or feel)? Again this sample helps. For me it became clear that I wanted keys with the "breakover" (snap action) feel that the extra moving part provides. That is only on the blue, green and white ones. The "bump" that the brown, clear and grey ones use to simulate it just doesn't do it for me. I'm in the camp that says it feels scratchy, like sandpaper. And I knew the red and black that smoothly bottom out weren't going to meet my needs. Of the three snap action ones, the blue is the lightest touch (least fatique), so that is probably the direction I will go. But I needed this test fixture to know that.
