Best value for a compact Y/C separator and TBC
These compact little units do a good job of converting composite video to Y/C separated video (i.e. S-Video). The internal TI decoder chip uses a 5-line adaptive digital 2D comb filter, giving you full bandwidth on both the chroma and luma channels, unlike the simple notch filters often built in to older devices (and even some newer ones!). You'll notice better resolution and fewer dot-crawl artifacts as a result. As a bonus, there's even an FPGA that digitally time base corrects the signal prior to converting back to analog. Perfect for VCR signals. It's not the widest range TBC, but worked fine for the vast majority of tapes I tried. Did I mention it's 10-bit?

Excellent for Low Power Devices
This is a good basic UPS for low power, 2-prong devices (e.g. router, cable modem, cordless phone base station). Because it it optimized for low power, it's more efficient than bigger units, which would be a waste in this scenario.
I bought a used unit and the battery was still usable despite being six years old. That implies it has a good charging strategy. Output is a modified square wave but it works just fine with wall-wart power supplies and even an LED lamp.

Great for transferring tapes to DVDs but watch out for burner defects!
Great for transferring old tapes to DVD
With no ATSC tuner these units are effectively obsolete for TV recording. They still have quite a following on the used market for tape transfers, however.
In particular they are able to sync to the somewhat unstable signal generated by VHS and other consumer tape formats as well as reduce the noise inherent in them. The latter feature is what makes this machine so valuable. No modern recorder has this capability. Without it the video encoder overloads trying to compress the noise and results in a DVD that looks worse than the original tape.
Though the recording quality is great on this machine it's very picky when it comes to media. It won't burn DVD+R's and the DVD-R's it generates sometimes play poorly on standalone DVD players. Luckily it does have an option to slow down the burner during high-speed dubbing and this often alleviates the problem. I've found Verbatim 16X discs work well.
