It is in great shape.
The flash operates well. It seems to still have its full power. Occasionally with an older flash it won't quite light things up like it did when it was new. This flash doesn't appear to have been overworked. That may change now that it's in our hands. Even the power cord attaches solidly; that seems to be the first failure with these old Vivitars, unless the foot itself breaks first.

Needed to replace one that had served well and reached the end of its life.
One came with some used equipment we picked up some years ago. We have picked up a couple of new ones along the way. I had one of the older ones that the red light wasn't coming on when in use, so I ordered this new one. The light indicates that it is capable of protecting your equipment.

filters to go with the adapter I found
I was glad to find these filters to go with the FA-3 filter adapter I found. I would like to find the wide angle filter kit, as well. I don't use the colored filters often, but it's good to have3 them on hand.
