CANON EF-S 55-250MM F/4-5.6 IS STM LENS REVIEW BY DAVID FENTON
2 of 2 found this helpful This lens does a great job for what it is. It is a light, compact zoom that is equivalent to a 90-400mm on a full frame. It is not as sharp as say the 100mm 2.8 prime or an L zoom and can't blur the background like such lenses ... but it covers the 55-250mm range for about $200 brand new (Australian).
I have found this lens gives very sharp results by using manual focus, a tripod and a timer or button shutter release. I really like the STM electronic focusing in how it enables very fine focus control. I have been able to get the very best the lens has to offer by turning the focus ring slowly. It just gives a level of focus control and precision not possible on other lenses like the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro.
This lens isn't a true 1:1 macro but it gets in close. And I have found it sharp enough to bring out the fine matrix details of insect eyes with my 700d. (tripod, manual focus, button release is generally needed to get such results)
I use a tripod a lot but when hand holding have found the image stabilizer to help in controlling camera shake.
The zoom works quickly and smoothly and has enough 'grip' to stay put so far. I get the feeling that it could loosen up in the years to come as it doesn't grip that tightly.
I have found my camera (700d) auto focus to not give results as good as manual focus with this lens. But it focuses quickly and with enough precision to get what I consider ok focused shots (I am rather nit-picky about sharpness and if it isn't 'perfect' I tend to delete the photo. I do get plenty of keepers with this lens on auto focus but I'm also often disappointed with its auto focus performance on my 700d)
I have a couple of primes and really appreciate the extra sharpness they provide and I would have liked to have bought a 70-200L zoom, or similar, but just couldn't afford it. I'm glad I decided to get the 55-250mm. I'm not getting photo's as good as a prime or L lens but when I share my photos taken with this lens, people comment on how beautiful they are.

Great Value knife Sharpener
WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT IT?
It has done a good job of putting consistent and lasting edges on our knives.
I used to regularly touch up our knives freehand using a diamond stone and they got sharp but didn't hold an edge because I sharpened at too fine an angle. After using this sharpener and putting a cutting angle of 20 degrees our knives came up sharp enough to easily slice paper and they are keeping sharp. This is probably because the edge on them is consistent and at a strong angle.
The suction base worked very well on our kitchen bench when a little water was put under it. Without the water it didn't always hold firmly.
WHAT IS BAD ABOUT IT?
Setting up and using it requires some patience and skill the first time. The instructions to use both the right and left hands for sharpening mean the sharpener best suits the percentage of the population that is ambidextrous i.e. not many people. But I just figured a way of holding the knife blade that worked for me and the results were good from the get go. And sometimes I just use my left hand and it works alright, though it feels awkward.
USE
To simplify sharpening I simply set our knives in a position that was stable and I just used that for the entire blade. This means the angle will be a few degrees different from the centre to the ends but this will be gradual and smooth and the knives still got sharp.
OVERALL
A great value tool to help maintain a consistent angle (or almost consistent if you do it like me) while putting effective cutting edges on knives while using a variety of stones.
