Days of Future Past
The memories stand clear n my mind. It is Super Bowl Sunday and I believe it is 1982. I worked way too many hours back then and was looking forward to the Super Bowl and a relaxing day. My boys were three and four and they wanted to go see ET. "You said you would," was all I heard all morning. I didn't want to, I really didn't want to go see the movie on that day, at that time; but off we went because I promised two little kids. The movie was spectacular and I really enjoyed it. The boys were as quiet as church mice and we were all enthralled. Finally at the point where ET dies (I hope I didn't ruin it for you) my younger son crawled up into my lap and cried and cried because ET was dead. That was one of those moments that a parent shares with a child that lasts a lifetime in the mind. It is a viewport into the heart of childlike innocence. Many years have passed and I now have a grandaughter. Her dad, just like his dad before him, works way too many hours and has way too few moments to spend with his family. I thought it appropriate then that I should buy the little girl her own copy of ET which they could share together. I think they will enjoy it and I sure hope they invite Grandpa along for the show.
