I plugged it in and it works.

This was the most cost effective solution for backing up my 750Gb hard drive. I plugged it in and it works. Doesn't get much better or more simple than that.

Shure SM57 Dynamic Instrument Microphone

There are a lot of reasons this is the most popular mic on the planet.

It works. It just works. It doesn't matter how much you abuse it (not recommending that you abuse your equipment), it just works. After whatever holocaust wipes out humanity, if the cockroaches learn how to use mics, they will most likely be using SM57s. Then there is the fact that it also works well. That is to say that it does a good job of picking up sound and turning it into a clean signal. And I'm talking acoustic instruments, vocals, percussion, and guitar amps. There's a reason that it is the first mic a sound tech is likely to grab. Is it the absolute best mic for instruments or vocals? No. I have condenser mics that do a better job of picking up sound. But I'm not about to put those on a stage for a lively performance. If a stand with one of those gets knocked over, it can get to be a very expensive experience. If a stand with a 57 gets knocked over, I might check the stand for damage.
