What happened to our beloved show?

I'm very disappointed in seasons 7 & 8 of The Walking Dead. The story has gone away from it's original line. I could hardly stay awake watching season 8. Endless gun fight after gun fight. No variation. The season ending episode was anticlimactic...I dont think there will be much anticipation in the coming season 9.
