Really Great Set (and Series)
"Tekkaman the Space Knight" is a really amazing show by 70's standards. Now granted, I like old stuff like the Flintstones, Speed Racer, and the Jetsons, so I might be a bit biased. However, the general gist of the show is well done for a rather old cartoon. Basically George/Joji becomes Tekkaman through the power of controlled radiation to defeat the aliens that killed his father. By killing the invading aliens, George would help preserve the human race as the humans desperately need to leave a very polluted Earth or face extinction.
Because this is an older show with a somewhat limited budget, you can actually notice some hilarious effects if you have a keen eye. I was able to notice when the corners of the animation cels are moving during sliding shots (i.e. Tekkaman riding Pegas, spaceships jettisoning in space, etc.). That being said, it doesn't detract from the story of the show. It could just be something that exists in the Italian release of the Blu-Rays.
The only major downside that I can say about this release is that there aren't any English subtitles. I knew that when getting the set, but I still have to mention that as its a BIT annoying to have to translate Italian on the fly when watching the series (good thing I know root words well). It's nice that they have the Japanese dub as well as the Italian dub in this set (normally releases outside of Japan are just in the language of the region that they released in). You can tell that this set is of great quality in general.
I'd recommend giving this show a watch (as well as Tekkaman Blade / Teknoman, a re-imagined version of the series) if you like classic cartoons. The only released English subs that you can find on the web are poorly done, so you'll either have to wait for someone else to create a new set of subs (I'm actually working on some right now by Google Translating the Italian sub and then applying proper grammar so I don't have to learn a new language). Otherwise you'll have to learn Italian or Japanese (never hurts to learn either).
