Beautiful and cram packed with information that will make your child want to learn.
This series is beautiful. Every pages is filled with beautiful, detailed artwork and pleasant lines of poetry suitable for reading to a child who doesn't sit still very long. Each page also has a sidebar giving much more detailed information about the page. It is very easy to adjust this book to fit the needs of multiple levels of learners as part of a lesson, but it's also pleasant enough for children to want to read for fun.

The Bread Winner by Arvella Whitmore
When my nine year old daughter brought this book home from the library two years ago, we both fell in love with this depression era story. As 4-H loving, bread baking, fair goers, we instantly identified with shy Sarah who is home-sick for the calf she was hand raising and whose most prized possession is the blue ribbon she won for her delicious home baked bread at the county fair. When the family loses the farm and almost everything they own, Sarah tries to be optimistic about making new friends and the excitement of city life. Once she sees the shack they're moving into and the sassy bullies who roam the neighborhood, her only comfort is her parents' promise that it's only temporary. But her father can't find work, and there aren't enough hours in the day for her mother to earn both rent and grocery money taking in laundry. She thinks things can't get worse until her father, feeling ashamed to be eating up his wife's meager earnings, disappears on a train. Finally, one of Mother's best customers drops by to pick up laundry just as Sarah is taking the week's baking from the oven. Sarah hatches a new plan. With 15 cents and determination, she begins a new business that, at first, means ice cream but soon grows into something much more important; reclaiming the pride and self-respect of the entire family. Along the way she learns discipline, assertiveness, budgeting, bartering, and networking.
Now that we have our own copy, my daughters and I are enjoying reading this encouraging tale again.

A great finish to a beautiful set
2 of 2 found this helpful When I first saw The Quiltmaker's Gift and The Quiltmaker's Journey, I was enchanted by the beautiful illustrations. The stories were just as sweet as the pictures, and my kids enjoyed matching the quilt designs incorporated into each page with the charts inside the covers. When I realized these were actually traditional patterns which were available as a set, we all got excited. I ordered both Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift, and More Quilts from The Quiltmaker's Gift based solely on the beauty of the original books. When More Quilts arrived, I was pleased to find that same beauty plus the history of each pattern, explanations of how each was chosen for the story, photos of multiple quilts for each pattern in different color schemes, templates, fabric requirements, layout diagrams, difficulty ratings and tips on assembling each pattern, and stories of people who stitched the quilts in the photos. It also includes sections on basic quilting supplies, fabric selection, cutting, pinning and pressing, setting, assembling, and finishing. There's also a great resource section in the back which includes street addresses, phone numbers and websites for all kinds of quilting resources. If you want to inspire someone to get a new project going, sharing this book is a great way to start!
