Good old movie
Even though there is Catholic mob propaganda in this old story - Richard the Lionheart being a very unlikely buddy of the “Robin” getting justice against Catholic aristocats is the real story of Robin up against the Catholic Church who kills “Robins” like Cardinal Ratzinger types kill rats. The names are encoded of corse. Catholics hating the little Robin bird - in the old stories pictured with a jaunty feather in his cap.
They also added thier favorite propaganda - into the old stories, book versions or movies with Errol Flynn. Robin kills the “deer” that buck the praying predator systems. Both the actual animal they kill and the type of people who buck systems who protect all that life that they hurt. This version I did like some, they at least show the hunters, hunting the boy as the sick bad ones they are, not like in the Catholic propaganda movie “Hunger Games” where they reverse the rebellion’s criticism and portray the hunters and the cruel as the sad victims. They live to “flip the script.” Where the sadistic are the good guys.
This movie also portrayed maid Marian as a strong, beautiful woman and I believe her caretaker maid was a true Marian as well and maybe more so. I know strong kind ladies like that. I hated the way they portrayed Robin as insulting her in typical catty Catholic way instead of gallant like our real Robin hero would’ve been. They also take a shot at witches as they often do in these. The broom means they clean up organized crime, you do the math….
I remember this movie as the Robin story of my time and in spite of the cat poison, I liked the rest of the portrayals. Loved Morgan Freeman character, the sweetness and hope that is still shining through in these stories in spite of everything. Kevin Costner made an interesting Robin and better than the too perfect choices of some older ones. He seemed less cocky, more sweet and shy in places…
Those bits of poison are harder to ignore these days though after some of the things I’ve seen. Still, one of my favorite movies from the old days. To get any sweetness and heroism portrayed is so rare. We only get the strange remakes with bondagey dom sex like in the one with Russel Crowe. Ugh.
