Lakland Skyline 55-02 - Five String Bass
I have been looking for a bass that was 5 strings, played well, and sounded great for my studio and after playing the Skyline, I decided that I found a winner. The Skyline is a well made, bolt on neck bass, with a nice finish and smooth feel. It isn't too heavy, and feels quite natural to my hands. The fretwork is solid and there aren't any dead spots. The action is a little high currently, but that is an easy fix, and it is quite easy to intonate. As nice as the bass is, it is the active electronics that sold it on me. I have compared the new Lakland pickups to the older Bartolini's and the new ones are quite a bit more punchy and thick. The older Barts are more clean sounding, precise and almost thin, though in no way bad. The new ones just simply own when it comes to beef and punch...there is just no other way to describe it. If I were to need a bass for jazz or smooth listening, I'd go with the Barts...if I needed a bass for rock, metal, funk, or even country, I'd go with the new pickups. The EQ options are great, and give ample control over treble, mid, bass, mid sweep, and an internal 3 way switch for a mid crossover shift. All in all it is a great bass!
