    Our Tree Named Steve
I am an elementary school teacher. This book was a wonderful surprise to my unit on teaching about our environment. A family moves into a house where there is this big old tree. They decide to build around it, instead of cutting it down. The baby boy could not say "tree" and called it "STEVE". The book shows the tree's faithfulness during times of the kids growing up. It served as a playhouse, laundry hanger, shade for high-school sweet hearts. In the end of the book, the kids are grown up, and "Steve", the tree, was blown down in a big storm. But even in the storm, "Steve" blew down away from the house and dog house, looking out for the family one last time. My six year old students begged for me to reread this book often. I had tears in my eyes the first few times I read it. The verse is simple and poignant. A perfect book to celebrate how awesome trees are! My principal, who also is named Steve, retired this year. My teaching staff bought this book and we all signed it to give to him. We also dedicated a tree in his name.
