Judy Garland commands our attention
Critics consider A Star is Born to be Judy Garland's greatest film, one that garnered a well-deserved best actress oscar nomination. A Star is Born features James Mason as an actor struggling with booze as his wife's career skyrockets. Cemented by Judy's performances of The Man That Got Away and the famous Born in a Trunk sequence, among others, this film is as fresh today as it was when it was released in 1954. Garland's performances are touching -- without being schmaltzy. A must-have for Garland fans, but also a notable addition to any film collection.

Junebug contains memorable performances
Junebug features a seeries of strong perfrmances, but Amy Adams' appearance is a sttandout. She deserved her Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actress in this film of everyday life in a small town.
Strong screen writing and strong pacing make this theatrical release a standout.

Enjoyable family fare --
One of Esther Williams later, and probably better films as her MGM career was starting to wind down. The historical aspects of this feature are somewhat unique.
She made a couple of strong technicolore features after this for MGM, then tried her luck elsewhere in a couple of more dramatic roles. This film is colorful and endearing throughout with a strong score and of course the plentiful swim sequences built around Williams.
It's too bad Williams allowed her carerr to languish in the 1960s. She has both the looks and personality that she might have remained a supporting star into the 1970s as she approached her senior years.
