No "ladies" to be found in this movie!
The filming technique was quite extraordinary. The audience sees what Marlowe sees through the eyes of the camera. You rarely see Marlowe (Robert Montgomery) except in the mirror, or in a pre-beginning interview. I think it worked great. The story was full of twists, and the cast and acting superb. Lloyd Nolan was at his best as a murderous, crooked detective. Audrey Totter was at her seductive best. What a doll! Very entertaining. Pure film noir!

Down to earth, gritty, and realistic
Outstanding early social commentary with a sterling cast. Exposes the daily poverty in NYC in
the 1930's in unpolished reality. You can almost smell the garbage cans. No Hollywood make
over here. A true classic with the usual Bogart touch of excellence. A must see for any Bogart
fan, or a lover of the truth this movie embodied. Don't miss it. One of William Wyler's greatest
masterpieces.

A tale of tears and tyranny.
Good story. Good script. Outstanding cast. A proper dash of pathos. Great movie!
