a will to persist
Bradford Washburn's work in mapping voids of the Alaska wilds 20 years before it became a state was unsurpassed in adventure and probably even makes world exploration droll. A book full of surprises and a variable sign of the times during the Great Depression. A New Englander everywhere he went, the consummate perfectionist, even during tragedy. Try reading his stories in National Geographic issues mentioned in Robert's superb book. Great history too.

It all adds up...the math of science.
Thomas will give the feeling of life of the yesteryear in the context of doubt and commitment.
Goes very fast and shares the humility of the massive egos behind the scenes. How math became the real science of science.
Fun to read. Small size book...fits in a cargo pants pocket.
