Excellent Music, Horrible Mastering
This set covers the period when FM was transitioning from the blues to rock. The songs on all of the CDs are very good, with the exception of 'Kiln House', which is a little weaker than the others. This is early '70s rock at some of it's finest.
The problem is that this set is a Rhino reissue of the original Reprise albums and the mixing - or lack thereof - is atrocious. You can barely hear the vocals on some songs and the overall sound is 'washed out'. These were obviously not produced from the master tapes and the sound quality suffers because of this. For this reason, I don't recommend this set.
Instead, I would try the new 8 CD set released in Sept. 2020. The CDs from this set are included in the new one, along with 'Penguin', 'Heroes are Hard to Find' and "Live from the Record Plant,, December 15, 1974'. Although the new set is more expensive, all of the music has been remastered, so the sound quality is bound to be better than this set.
