VARIOUS-RIMSKY-KORSAKOV:LE COQ D`OR (UK IMPORT) CD NEW

Still the best-sung and conducted recording after 60 years.
This is still far and away the best-sung and -conducted recording of the opera after almost 60 years -- only the Svetlanov-led performance (long out of print) is remotely competitive. The Astrologer, Queen, Cockerel, and King Dodon are particularly fine. No new remastering has been done since 1968, however, and there is no libretto, only a plot synopsis. Also, the discs are difficult to pry off the sprockets in he digipak -- I had one disc crack in half, and had to order another set. So, be very careful!
Bruch: Symphonies 1-3; Concerto for Two Pianos, etc. (CD, 2009, 2 Discs, EMI)

Better alternative for most of these works can be found elsewhere
The recordings of the symphonies by Masur (Philips) and Wildner (ebs) are much superior. This premiere recording of the Concerto is good, but the Pekinel sisters with Marriner (Chandos). This is a must-buy for a Bruch completist (such as myself), and no-one else, only for the op. 12 and 14 piano pieces in their only recordings to date -- very minor works of poor quality, nowhere near Bruch at his best. The price is right; the set is now out of print.

One of the Better Translations of Dante's Masterpiece
Dorothy Sayers's translation of Dante's Divine Comedy has long been rightly recognized as one of the preferred versions in English. She makes a good success of keeping the original terza rima rhyming scheme in English; her translation is vivid, fluent, and compelling; and she has one of the best set of notes available (though not as detailed as Esolen or the massive volume Singleton version). And, as Sayers was herself a committed Christian (Anglican rather than Roman Catholic), she brings a sensitivity to theological aspects of the text that many secular commentators miss. All that said, for sheer reading pleasure and even greater fidelity to the Italian original, I would recommend the superb translations by John Ciardi or Robert and Jean Hollander.
