An acquired taste but worth it
The debacle of making this movie is legendary.
Multiple directors and screenwriters all shooting simultaneously yet uncoordinated burning through production money.
Peter Sellers refusing to play James Bond. Yet once on the set refusing to deliver any dialogue that states he’s anyone else but Bond. Then he was intimidated into speechlessness by Orson Welles to where they had to shoot their scenes twice with them both being on the set at the same time. The Sellers begged off the set citing health problems and simply failed to return until one day the crew read in the newspaper he was off shooting another movie somewhere else in the world!
The film is crazed fever dream. A Bond movie from an alternate dimension. But here’s the thing: It’s easily the equal to any legitimate Bond film in cast, score and production value.
And canon or no, it indelibly introduced the idea that James Bond 007 is a cover identity passed from agent to agent. It also scooped the humorous bent in the legitimate series by several years.
While writing the novels in the 50s Ian Fleming said if he would cast the part of Bond for a movie, he would choose… David Niven. Well, here he is! A decade late, but still!
The disc looks great!
