Why the Obvious Error can be louder than words.

I have a longterm friend in another town with whom I love to discuss books. When I arrived at his home and we had time to sit down and talk, James told me to sit down and take the test that is in the book. I did and I did miserably (“worse than your average chimp” as the authors state). I then began to read the book in earnest.
I ordered this copy my friend Bill. Bill is proposing that now that I have retired I should join him in writing a text on how to help people better understand risk. I am getting Bill his own copy because if I read Rosling correctly, people will never properly assess risk as he wishes because of the ten obfuscators (my word, not Rosling's) that stand in our way:
1. The Gap Instinct
2. The Negativity Instinct
3. The Straight Line Instinct
4. The Fear Instinct
5. The Size Instinct
6. The Generalization Instinct
7. The Destiny Instinct
8. The Single Perspective Instinct
9. The Blame Instinct
10. The Urgency Instinct
The list is helpful (and the book includes graphical representations for each of the ten (graphics, not graphs) to also assist in picturing and recalling them.
It is one of the most novel descriptions of how we mislead ourselves (and how to avoid doing so) than I have come across. Definitely worth the time.

The single most compelling and readable entry into chemistry
An earlier edition read in grade school, is what compelled me to a vocation in chemistry until almost age 80. His unique approach -- telling history by brief, authoritative biographies of key chemical figures -- is uniquely engaging: Science as a human activity.
Buy it and give it to a bright son, daughter, niece, nephew, or grandchild; you could change a life.
