Opening My Eyes
I've just begun reading it. I've picked up composition and color theory from a variety of sources but just the introduction and the first few pages of chapter one have convinced me that I need to muster the strength to read this either book. The first tidbit I picked up was a validation of what I keep telling people who what to learn by just trashing about: "Groping in vagueness is as unproductive as blind adherence to rules". At least with rules one has a jumping off point to depart from established fundamentals. Groping in vagueness has only lead me to frustration.
One of my other references is Harold Speed's "The Art and Practice of Drawing" which is good but a bit dated. Arnheim validates a lot of H. Speed. At least it's more contemporary, better than Joshua Reynolds "Discourses" which I was forced to wade through. But it is heavy sleding and not for the less than dedicated.

Cheap for a reason
Typical "Gray market" item. No instructions, one year warranty but no manufacturer name or address. I'm familiar with items like this and knew why it didn't work initially: battery has a protective disk to prevent drain during shipment. It took a good while to get it adjusted, need to be careful how it is mounted. Adjustments aren't just windage and elevation only but a strange combination of both. I'm glad I'm just using it on a cheap bb gun, because that's just about what it's good for. It seems prone to drift with temperature, not precise for fine adjustment and not very bright for outdoors. How it can be offered for such a low price is beyond me: more Made in China madness!
