ESP8266 for IoT
This board is programmable from the Arduino IDE or you can use LUA. The thing to watch out for is the baudrate, this seems to be auto detected but due to various reasons ends up being 230400 which is not in the menu of the IDE! I selected the closest baudrate and it worked. There are some good online courses which are essential to save time in getting it going, unfortunately we are not allowed to post links but there are some free ones including a recent one from "Instructables".
It gets a 4 because it has great functionality (only one analog in port though) and makes connecting devices to WiFi reasonably simple. Online tutorials will show you how to get sensors in your home (or greenhouse) to text, twitter, email you etc you when certain things happen.
It does not get a 5 due to being difficult to get into boot mode and having to read a few tutorials to get it to program.

Old phone required
This is fantastic little robot camera. It works well with my 2017 Samsung phone. The app is not compatible with a new OS though. I bought this to strip down and add a raspberry pi later. It will make a good little robot chassis.

Very useful, good for hobbies but not commercial (non RHOS)
They work very well in phase shift networks, if you have a three stage phase shift network then you can change all three resistive components at the same time and by the same amount with a single light source. Simplifies light level sensors. Unfortunately Cadmium is mostly banned in RHOS equipment.
