Great protection at a reasonable cost.
After looking at many others, I've been using the Otterbox Defender case for a number of years. It's not the prettiest one out there, but it's one of the most durable and protective cases on the market. I'm especially fond of the built in screen protector; no need to purchase anything separate.
Prices on eBay and other similar sites make it very affordable.
