Difficult to tell
Tube tester seems to work - found shorts and tubes I thought had issues tested "bad". But it's an old machine in need of work. Difficult to say one way or the other if it's worth getting since the High/Off/Low switch terns to jam and the case is so beat up. And I needed the manual and updated tube lists for may of my tube types which wasn't included. For now it's usable but it needs service and calibration before a final determination on rating can be stated.

The Little Things
2 of 2 found this helpful In audio, the little things always matter, and in the world of vinyl the cartridge is what actually touches the surface of the record, so picking the right one isn't always easy, especially if budget is a concern.
I've used other Audio Technica cartridges before, such as the AT33EV and the AT33PTG (first version). Both are outstanding performers in their price range, but if you can afford the ART-9 I would recommend it in a heartbeat. It has the tonal balance and tracking of the others but offers a more refined presentation while still getting things like the cymbals and other small percussives with uncanny accuracy, all the while still being sublime and delicious.

Outstanding Tubes
Without destroying the "wholeness" of a musical performance, these tubes bring every subtlety and nuance out as if there were never there before. No tube bloat here! Perfect round - yet taut - full bass notes well located in space. Vocals are not overemphasized nor lacking, and fully embroidered in lusciousness. Piano recordings are the most natural I've heard without being sharp, edgy, or muted. And guitar tone! If these do this in my home stereo monoblocks then I bet guitar players would love them in classic tubed guitar amps. And last, but not least, are the drums. Thump and snap plus shimmering cymbal strikes and coming from every corner of the soundstage. When I first tried tubes everyone talked about the good and the bad, the trade-offs, and the glory. This is the first time I've tasted the glory, and it was worth the journey.
