    The Croosing 太平轮: Part 1 & 2 (2014 Film) ~ 2-DVD ~ John Woo, Takeshi Kaneshiro

    The Asian Titanic
I purchased this DVD set because I had already seen the movie and liked it very much and was moved by the story and the fine acting by the entire cast, but mainly by Takeshi Kaneshiro, who demonstrates his multilingual skills throughout the film, speaking in Taiwanese Minnan, Japanese and Mandarin. I wish he had more screen time and his story was further developed, but this was still a wonderful movie nonetheless. The DVD quality is decent (not as clear or crisp as perhaps an HD version if it exists), but there is a difference I noticed in regards to the subtitles between the Part 1 dvd and the Part 2 dvd. For the Part 1 DVD, you can select English as a subtitle, and the translations appear to be well done and the subs are in fairly large print and easy and clear to read. For the Part 2 DVD, the English subs are embedded along with Chinese subs in the video, and you only have the option of choosing Malay subs, which can be either turned on or off. I'm not sure why the subtitle options on the Part 2 disc is different from the Part 1 disc, but it's a bit disappointing since the size of the fonts in the embedded subs are smaller, making it less easy to read. Other than that, the discs work fine and the special features contain the movie trailer and a photo gallery, but nothing else. I believe this John Woo film wasn't received well when it came out, but I felt the story was interesting and seeing the three separate storylines tie into the grand picture was emotionally compelling. The ensemble cast truly did an excellent job.

    More than just a photobook
This book is very joyful, with inspiring stories and well-shot photos. They included several Chinatowns in the US, and Canada, but I wish they had gone to Honolulu, Chinatown, which I would have loved to see. That said, Chinatown Pretty is still fabulous and makes a perfect coffee table addition.

    Helpful tip..
I haven't seen the full movie yet, and I'm sure it's campy and ridiculous because the title gives that away! Regardless, I will enjoy this because Takeshi Kaneshiro is in this film, and in having watched most of his movies and TV series to-date, I've truly come to recognize and appreciate his earnestness in all the roles that he has played. His acting chops truly makes him much more than a beautiful face to look at that he's become one of my favorite actors in general, and not just a favorite Asian actor. Based on the previous reviewer and the info he provided about the audio playing in both Mandarin and Cantonese at the same time, I still decided to buy this DVD because I wanted to see the movie. I was ready to do as suggested and mute the audio and just read the subtitles as I watched. Thankfully, I don't have to do that anymore. There is a work-around to get the audio to play in either Mandarin or Cantonese. What you have to do is pull out one of the speaker jacks from behind the TV (not sure if this is the correct lingo), but you have to remove either the left speaker or right speaker, and voila, it will play in just one language depending on which side you remove. Apparently, this is a thing they used to do with VCDs which I never knew until last night. I tested it, and it worked.
