Nitecore quality, simple to use.
2 of 2 found this helpful I am new to the 18650 battery and Nitecore Products. I purchased a Nitecore light at a discounted price and was very pleased with the light. I bought another brand of charger that is very similar to this Nitecore D2. The charger charged faster than the D2 and the batteries got a lot hotter. I purchased the D2 which charges the batteries just a little slower. In the long run, I think this is a better for the batteries. After all the batteries are used in a flashlight, and I bought spares. There is no way I could discharge a fresh battery before the other one was back to 100%. The readout is very informative and the charger is very easy to use. I ended up buying two of these as they will charge a variety of different size batteries including AA, AAA, AAAA, and C cells. The only other ones I have tried the charger on AA Eneloop and RCR123 cells, which the charger did a good job topping off the cells. I am very satisfied with charger performance and ease of operation.

For the money you cannot build a comparable regulator.
I was going to build a regulator to reduce the output of a car alternator voltage from 14 volts down to 12 volts. I had a ham radio that operate from 11 volts to 12 volts at 2 amps. Any voltage spike over 15 volts would burn out the radio. Also any voltage that ran to the radio over 12 volts made the regulators in the radio run hot. This regulator was was the solution and for a price far cheaper than I could build one. I set the trim pot to 12 volts output and it has not changed- regardless of what the input voltage the alternator is putting out. Unit is rated at 5 amps. It gives me peace of mind knowing a spike from the alternator will not burn out my radio.

Works good for two radios which require 20 amps or less
The Astron unit works great for two way radios which require 20 amps or less. I am using the this converter to step down the voltage of Motorola 24 VDC power supply. Apparently the Astron is popular for aircraft, 18 wheeler, golf carts, and heavy duty farm machinery. Most of the time the converter is used to run a stereo or low power CB radio. In this application the unit will run cool without any problems. Running the unit at max amperage would require mounting it in a location with good ventilation, or running a fan on the unit. If you need more amperage, the Samlex SDC-30 would be the unit to purchase as it is rated to 30 amps RMS. It has a built in fan and carries a much higher price. For 20 amps or lower, the Astron is a bargain.
