Solid resource.
Required reading for anyone who wants to get a handle on the basics of lighting.
No matter if you're a novice or an old hand, there are plenty of infonuggets here for everyone.
Concepts are broken into easily digestible bits, and the text is concise, well organized, and articulate. Great illustration and support imagery for those of you who are visual adapters (like me). Overall a super presentation that will surface a new level of understanding for those willing to spend a bit of time reading this book.
This one is a keeper. Get your own copy and start giving that highlighter a work out.
Makes a nifty prezzy for your photofriends too.

Very good, but not brilliant.
If you're looking for a shopping-list type breakdown of the wonders of your 50d, this ain't it. It feels more like a general book on digital photography, with a few 50d specifics woven into the text.
Writing and support images are very good, and it does give a sound impression of what the 50d is capable of, but there are better offerings on the manipulation of buttons, bells, and whizmos specific to this camera, which is what I was after.
Still, highly useful and a very informative read, ( even if you don't have a Canon camera) but not the first thing I'd reach for when trying to learn the layout of the good ole' 50d.

Like infosnacks that you can't stop consuming...
Scott Kelby must be a walking encyclopedia of all things digital and photographic.
His ability to break stuff down into easily learnable bits probably has a lot to do with his success, and he is a generous and superb teacher.
Pro:
The format of these books make the ideas presented VERY easy to grasp, and there is a true wealth of ideas on offer here. It's hard not to learn something every time you pick one of these books up.
Cons:
It can be a little hard to organize notes for future reference with this multi-volume collection.
Kelby has a charismatic writing style that indulges non-sequitur and abstract references in a way that has always annoyed and fatigued me. Some people love it, but I do not.
Volume 5 is like the collected greatest hits from the previous 4 editions. It's actually the one I started with by borrowing it from the library. I liked it enough that I wanted a copy of my own to mark up with margin notes. I was able to find this used for a dirt-cheap price and was happy to get it.
These are truly great books, and well worth the indulgence of the writer's occasionally annoying habits.
