A Cautionary Tale
4 of 4 found this helpful The novel which was the basis for this film, like many others written before and after it, takes a harsh look at the potential results of the Cold War of the 1950s and 1960s. As brought to the screen, it tells of the immediate aftermath of a thermonuclear exchange between the United States and the USSR, following it to its logical conclusion. Through a mixed bag of characters, granted a temporary reprieve by the fact that the initial destruction took place in the Northern Hemisphere, we see played out the range of emotions which likely would be demonstrated by those facing the predictable, imminent death of humanity.
The movie was nominated for several Academy Awards, but was released in the same year as Ben-Hur, and was shot in black-and-white. In addition, although there are scenes of relatively high humor, and even a little excitement, there always is the undercurrent of impending doom. These characteristics were not favored by academy voters at the time, and the movie was shut out. However, it remains a meaningful tale, and looks realistically at a possible "End Times" scenario. This is mankind, on the way out.

Excellent resource!
This is a very comprehensive and detailed look at the subject aircraft models, including several airframes in more than one scale. Many after-market items are used and described, to help the reader to determine how much extra effort is worthwhile. should be of great value to modelers of these types of aircraft.

Great History & Graphics
I haven't finished the complete season, but I am pretty familiar with the territory covered. The interviews with survivors are interesting, and give verisimilitude and personal insight. Too bad there aren't that many of them around.
The graphics are quite good, and realistic. So far, the descriptions of the ships and aircraft are accurate [although not always exactly correct for the times presented; I am just getting into 1943, and there might be more issues, as newer carriers were named for those already sunk by then]. Even so, the feeling is there, and History Channel offers views and perspectives that are not available in conventional combat footage. I don't know that I've ever seen a dive bombing attack from the perspective of the dive bomber's pilot before, for example. The surface ship combat scenes seem quite realistic as well.
Of course, this primarily is a history of one ship. On that basis, even with some other important actions, such as the Battle of the Coral Sea, missing, Enterprise was a very prominent player in these campaigns, and the presentation is well worth the time.
