BLAZES, POSTS & STONES: A HISTORY OF OHIO'S ORIGINAL LAND By James Williams NEW
    Aug 19, 2022
See Surveying in a Whole New Light (and Appreciation!)
See Surveying in a Whole New Light (and Appreciation!) - In the mid- to late-1800s in the part of the Northwest Territory now known as Ohio, surveying this vast expanse of heavily wooded, already-long-settled land by what amounted to - in the eyes of the Indian tribes - invaders, meant a job fraught with many perils. Surveyors were often not paid in advance, were seldom compensated well enough to live well, and were often faced with health-destroying weather. They had to face flooding, bitter winters, were often able to travel only afoot, and came to dream of the family they left behind in order to map out a new state. More than one of them did not survive the task at hand. Several were not as dedicated to the arduous efforts required. Some 'cut corners' and did not adhere to proper and accurate surveying. Israel Ludlow was possessed of the courage of his convictions and persevered, but his vitally important work cost him dearly. He did not live a long life. He gave all he had to the certain knowledge that, in order to wrest an accurate survey of this wild land north of the Ohio River and south of Lake Erie, his lot would mean living on irregular meals that had to be hunted before being eaten. It would mean he would have to flee for his very life and that of his fellow surveyors and helpers, on more than one occasion. It would test his mettle at most every turn, yet still, he must deliver an accurate description, proven and marked with "blazes, posts and stones" so the land might be improved and settled. This book was like sitting down to a seven-course meal and had to be digested a little at a time. It took me two months to read but was a thousand percent worth my time! One item, which today's surveyors and residents now take for granted, described a stop to rest at the end of a season of surveying. The wife of the home prepared a meal for the weary travelers that included homemade bread, something not seen since they'd left home many months earlier. The chains utilized in measuring were heavy and the hours spent in all kinds of weather, were long. I cannot give anything less than my profound appreciation for this book representing decades in the making. Five stars plus is my highest recommendation. I am not a surveyor, but a born and bred Ohioan who never fully grasped the price paid by men like Israel Ludlow, surveyor.
