    Best of the best ...
The Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AI and AIS lenses are some of the best portrait lenses ever made. Razor sharp and with some of the creamiest bokeh you will ever see in a package that is so small and light that you could misplace it. The AI lens has a stiffer focusing ring and the AIS lens has a built in lens hood, but they are otherwise considered identical in their image quality. Note that one of these lenses shot the famous Afghan Girl image, which should be more than enough to recommend this lens on its own. I paid under $100 for my AI copy (I previously owned a mint AIS and foolishly sold it to acquire other equipment), and I consider my new copy the bargain of the century.

Nikon Ai Nikkor 105mm f2.5 MF Lens (3249)

my third copy of the venerable 105 2.5
I've reviewed this before, but I just have to say that I am going to keep this one forever. The image quality is incredible, even wide open. There is nothing quite like it for the price (I paid in the low hundreds in CAD). Seriously, you owe it to yourself to try one of these out. I actually prefer the Ai version over the AiS version because of the rounded aperture blades and the longer focus throw, which makes it much easier to get pinpoint focus. These are subtle differences, but for me there is no reason to may the extra money for the AiS (unless an integrated lens hood is really important to you).

Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4.0-5.6 Di VC USD Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras *NEW*

at this price it is a steal
I find the Tamron 100-300 VC USD to be the best long lens of any brand that I have used. The stability of the image in the viewfinder is breathtaking, and the focus performance is excellent. I find the imagery to be very good wide open and stunning at f/8. I do not hesitate to use this on the finest of details (e.g. chickadees) and I am never disappointed.
