Best chess set I have ever had!
Over the years I have always wanted a beautiful medieval chess set. I wanted the king to look like a king. The queen to look like a real queen. The pawns to look like real fighting soldiers and so on. I have seen other boards on different sites and read reviews. Other chess sets from other sites have pieces that break easily if knocked over and bad hand painting. I couldn't play with a chess set where the King and Queen are cross-eyed due to really bad hand painting or the queen looks like an 8 year old girl trying to clumsily put on lipstick because of someone's poor hand painting. I am so glad that I waited until now to finally buy this chess set. The first thing I did was to check out the king and queen. I couldn't be more thrilled. The eyes on every noble piece are hand painted perfectly. For example, the queen has hand painted pearls around her neck with a perfectly hand painted brooch on her pearls in a different colour. Just brilliant! In the seller's review it stated that the set looks even better in real life. How true was that. The set is perfect!
And another thing I didn't like about other sets from other sites. Some sets have pieces that are ALL in heavy armour. So the pawns are in armour and so are the bishops, the queen and the king. You wouldn't even be able to play with the pieces because it would be practically impossible to work out which piece was which. A player would have to do it with regard to the sizes of the pieces. And how unrealistic to have the queen in armour. As if she is like a pawn ready to fight. Or the bishops in armour as tho they were just taller pawns. And how impossible to use as a real chess set if every piece is so hard to work out what it is. Not so with this beautiful set. The workmanship on the pieces is absolutely perfect in every detail. I couldn't be happier.
And it's so easy to play a game because every piece looks like the way it should. The bishops look like clerics. The king is unmistakeable. The queen is beautiful in appearance. The knights are horses ordained in their protective armour ready for the fight. The rooks are like the fortifications they should be with brick patterns, windows and even twin doors with door handles! The attention to detail is amazing! And the pawns, and only the pawns, are wearing armour and fortunately don't have eyes painted inside their visors as that would be unnecessary and detract from the elegance of the back-rank nobility.
And when the pieces take on the board, instead of damaging the actual workmanship of the piece itself if the pieces clink together as the capture takes place, the bulbous acrylic base protects the players body above so that only the tough yet attractive blue and red bases clink together at the capture.
And each piece has felt on the bottom and is delightfully weighted [the pieces in total weigh around 4 pounds or nearly 2 kg]. So instead of lifting light wooden pieces and placing them on their new square as I do on my old cheap set, these pieces are so elegant that, apart from the knight, I like to slide them gently and quietly across the board on their felt bases.
And that board! How beautiful! Burr cherry wood. A Rolls-Royce has a burr walnut fascia panel and whilst I don't have a Rolls, at least I have a burr cherry wood board. A real piece of craftmanship. Worthy, along with the pieces, to have pride of place in any room to welcome any visitor to enjoy a quiet game of chess on a stunning board using magnificent authentic medieval pieces. Thankyou for a great chess set. The best I have ever had!
