German engineering at its finest
Rohloff makes life easy with this oil change kit. Not hard at all to understand. One oil change per year and you’re good to go. I am never going back to scrubbing filthy open cassettes! Here’s a tip: save the used drain tube for next time. You can use it again to drain the dirty oil. Then use the new clean drain tube to fill up with 100% clean oil.

Excellent Case at a Competitive Price
The Galaxy Zenith viola case has many fine attributes and with only a few drawbacks that are easily worked around. Manufactured in Korea, it is very minimalist in design. It is very light at 4.4 lbs., but at the same time very roomy, including four bow holders with decent quality spinners. It is nicely appointed with two combo lock latches, decent quality handle and D-rings for attaching straps. Plus a decent quality subway strap. The backpacking straps are also good quality, being metal clips rather than plastic. The case backpacks nicely, both slant-slinger style, lefty or righty, or centered. Centering it avoids clanking it through door frames. Being light it is easy on the back. The case material is listed as ABS plastic and polyurethane. As I understand it, ABS is used for 5 mph bumpers on automobiles. Also used in Legos. It is presumably impact resistant to a point, but I hope I never have it put to a real-life test! The polyurethane part refers to the finish, I assume, which is smooth and slippery. In fact, if you try and open the case on your lap, it slips all around. True also when backpacked. Adding grip tape to the bottom panel will be my work-around for this. How it takes scuffing remains to be seen. And my early experience with the case would indicate it lacks significant insulating ability, also true of carbon fiber cases. The inside pouch holds a surprising amount of stuff, but, you know, you want to get at your rosin and you have to dig through your other bric-a-brac to get to it. I wish there were additional pouches, or one large pouch. But a simple work-around is to add your own bags and they will nest nicely over the scroll or alongside the neck of your instrument. There’s no blanket, but I put my instrument in a silk bag anyway. There is one oddity which is perhaps a testimony to the case’s airtight seals: when you close the case, air hisses out through a rear hinge. By design? I don’t know. Overall I am beyond satisfied with this case and happy to discover a competitively priced alternative to the offerings of the BAM and GEWA case companies.
