Cured my problem
My Dell Optiplex 990 SFF has had problems of "losing" wired USB mice. Tried different mice, different port (USB2 and USB3), BIOS updates all to no avail. This is a known chronic problem with this otherwise very fine computer. Just for the halibut I decided to try the m705 with its dongle plugged into a front panel USB port. Haven't had a "lost" mouse since.

It's birdseed... whatchu 'spect?
