questionable battery

The battery was installed in my Timex Indigo watch and appeared to work. Then it when dead like the old battery. It appeared like the battery was not good to begin with, the watch face outlines with no digits. But when I looked at it, my Timex, again, there were digits of different time, so it is shutting down and starting back up again, repeatedly. So I don't know what to think. I have no battery tester to know for certain that it is the battery. But it acts like it has a threshold voltage level.
