Excellent Counted Cross Stitch sampler Kit
1 of 1 found this helpful This is the first time I've purchased a counted cross stitch kit by Bucilla, and I am very pleased with the quality of materials included, charting and pre-sorted floss.
S Orton's season designs are elaborate and beautifully charted. This kit may not be ideal for a novice cross stitcher, but if you have worked on kits before or have the confidence to try something new and/or challenging, I would recommend any of the kits in this series of four seasonal designs.
The Aida fabric included in the kit is softer than I'm used to, but I really like it. (I believe it says it is Zweigart fabric, but I might be wrong). All the flosses are pre-sorted and on a cardboard floss organizer. I prefer using Floss Away baggies when working on large projects so having the floss SORTED already made it easy to remove them from the organizer and put them into my labeled zip-lock baggies. I believe the flosses are DMC brand as the numbers they are coded with match DMC (310 is black, for example).
I noticed a SLIGHT flaw on the front and back of one page of the chart (it's printed on the front and back of two sheets). This wasn't anything major, but I wrote to the company email address noted on the enclosed directions and they shipped me an entirely NEW set of the charts and instructions! I received this about 2-3 days after contacting them -- so the Customer Service from this company is exceptional.
This design contains primarily counted cross stitch in both whole and half stitch variations. I think there are a FEW quarter stitches also. As is common with most cross stitch designs, there is a fair amount of back-stitching as well and a few "Blackwork" motifs (which are referred to as back-stitch on the chart directions.) French knots are also present - but nowadays you can find PLENTY of videos/tutorials on YouTube if you're a little rusty on French knots or backstitching techniques.
Overall, I would have to give this kit an A in terms of quality of materials, directions, and Customer Service. I think a detailed design like this sampler will keep an experienced stitcher like myself busy for at least a few months. A newer or introductory cross stitcher MAY feel a bit intimidated by the amount of stitching BUT I don't see any reason why a new stitcher should avoid the kits in this series. I now have all four kits in this seasonal sampler series, and look forward to stitching all four to display in my home (I think I'll rotate them as the appropriate season begins).
If you like the design(s) in this series, you'd be very happy with any of the four kits in the collection, I would think. Happy stitching!
PS: You will need to provide your own hoop/q-snap or stitching frame to complete this kit. It is ready to begin pretty much immediately but you will want to prep the fabric edges to prevent fraying as well (I use Fray Check which is EASY to apply and dries quickly!)

Beautiful Dimensions Gold kit
I believe this kit is no longer in print by Dimensions Gold, so I was thrilled to find it on EBay at a reasonable price to add to my collection. Can’t wait to stitch this and the companion piece, Hidden Spirits.

Great kits by Mill Hill AND Laurel Burch!
Mill Hill puts together exceptional kits which include all the materials to create their designs - including the perforated paper (or fabric), needles, beads, buttons, plenty of threads and detailed instructions.
I love Laurel Burch designs because they are BRIGHT and full of funky colors which make them exciting and fun to stitch. The dragonfly designs are 6” square when completed, so these are nice sized projects for a beginner in counted cross stitch OR experienced stitchers alike. The Mill Hill frames are NOT included in the kits, but are easily available on EBay, online or at your local needlework shop. Don’t be intimidated by the beading! It’s easy and FUN once you get the hang of it!
