Disappointing, unsatisfactory
1 of 1 found this helpful This book contains the b/w and coloured woodcuts of Mount Fuji. Nice to have them both together in one book.
I would love to say more positive things about the book but briefly said it is disappointing in many aspects.
-The b/w reproductions are of such a low quality. All the characteristic sharp outlines are blurry, out of focus, the subtile shades of gray disappeared and the b/w reproductions as a whole turned out blueish. The prints are somewhat larger than original woodcuts are.
-The coloured reproductions lack a lot of the bright and fresh saturated colours of the original woodcuts. They turned out blueish/ greenish with some faded orange colours here and there. The originals approximate A3 size and are reproduced here in picture postcard size. So a lot of information and its charm got completely lost.
-The accompanying text to the images is not very informative, it mostly describes what you have seen already on the image.
For the b/w woodcuts of Hokusai's views on Mount Fui there is a much better book on the market which doesn't suffer from the above mentioned issues: 'Hokusai: One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji', author Henry D. Smith.
