After investing time in the learning curve, the 710 will do it all.
11 of 12 found this helpful Garmin has had the market cornered on do-it-all hand-held GPS units. I have owned Garmins for a long time. I researched before buying a new one and almost bought a new Garmin Oregon series.
Then I found about about the Magellan Explorist 710. I researched more and found that Magellan has been very serious about taking the lead in the market.
The 710 has pre-loaded maps for the USA - both street maps and topo maps. No maps to buy. There may be updates to the maps to purchase later, but nothing to buy up front - that is a big plus over the Garmin system. And you can load custom maps as well.
The GPS itself has a ton of features. It operates with a touch screen. Although touch screens are not really for me, I must say it does work well. The learning curve is a little steep because of the numerous features, but once you have it down it is quite intuitive. The display is large, larger than all the other hand-helds I looked at, and it is very bright and clear.
Magellan has updated the internal software at least a few times, and they appear to be responsive to the requests of users. The online forum related to the Explorist series is a big help and it appears to be moderated by a Magellan insider.
The unit has a lot of internal memory - something like 3GB, and it accepts micro SD cards for more storage. The unit has a built-in camera and video recorder, so you can attempt to fill all that space.
I can come up with only two complaints about the 710:
The touch screen is a little fidgety. Maybe it takes practice to develop just the right touch. It works well, but sometimes I would like to have hard buttons to push.
The other thing worth mentioning it that the unit is hard on batteries. My Garmin went about 10-12 hours with a pair of rechargeable AA Sanyo Eneloops. The 710 will go for about five or six hours. I have a good stock of Eneloops so I am never without power - but it is noteworthy that they need replacing so frequently.
Without a doubt, I am glad I bought the Magellan. If I lost this one I would replace it with the same model.

Great unit
I use it to run through the aux input in my car stereo. I works well. I bought a unit that was $10 cheaper and this one is $100 better. Screen is easy to read, settings are easy to make, it does what it's supposed to do and it does it well.

Does what is expected
Power 2000 is a brand I've used before and the battery seems to be performing as it should, no issues. The charger works properly. With this particular unit the battery is very tight fitting into the charger - but I've had the other kind - so loose that the battery can fall out. This is better.
