    Excellent!
Talk about good Halloween reading! Giant Size Chillers #3 was such a favorite when I was a kid (by chance, my brother purchased it), I looked for Giant Size #1 and #2 later on. Three has some truly excellent stories, all reprints; among them, the one depicted here on the cover, tho slightly altered, with an old man who turns into a gargoyle. There's a Jack Kirby masterpiece about a 'monster' who lives in a village and is tormented by the townsfolk; a young girl whose name is carved on a witch's tree; a man who finds his auto-biography in a bookstore and what results when the pages are suddenly blank; a man with an Indian's curse; and the final brilliant story with a mad scientist and his assistant. An amazing collection. At the beginning and the end, we are treated to one page each of Len Wein and another writer (Gerry Conway?) with one chaining the other up in a basement to write the stories. Hilarious tidbits, and then a final conclusion with the first appearance of Tigra as she is taking over the Chillers titles.

No Hint of The Sixties TV show Here
Contained in this volume is a story each with the Catwoman reforming, Two Face perishing and the Joker's rarely seen origin. We also get a Mr. freeze story that was rather irrelevant (and probably included as it simply mirrors the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie appearance). Mr. Freeze, or Mr. Zero, was never a true bad guy, it seems, just misguided because of his condition. There is also a story with Robin posing as another boy who is supposed to be impersonating Robin to fool Batman and Alfred. Could have done without this story. There are a couple of alien stories as well, since the fifties ended on this note of outer space threat. There is also a story with Batwoman, Batmite and Ace the Bathound. Truthfully, Ace's story is the best of these three. It seems Vicki Vale, Batwoman, Ace and Batmite were all done away with in the early sixties, just a few years before the Adam West show. Why were these earlier elements done away with? Stupidity or silliness seems to be regarded as the cause, then look what the show did. Funnier still, the show was supposed to be inspired by two issues with the Riddler and the late forties serial. I recently purchased the serial and quite honestly, I didnt see the inspiration for the sixties show and its camp. Batman in the Fifties also includes interesting stories about the batmobile and another one about the batbelt. That you could honestly get a story about a belt is beyond me, but the book contains it and it is truly a good read. And a story about the batarangs and the Batarang That Must Never Be Used, or something like that. (Oh, a quick check revealed it was the secretive Batarang X. It was a giant Batarang that the dynamic duo flew on, like hang-gliding. The secret is out. oops!) there is also a teamup with Superman, a Batman from the future and a story of Batman, the Superman of another planet story. The only real clunker for me was the appearance of several covers such as the Rainbow Batman or one with a villian called Killer Moth. I would have really liked to see that Rainbow Batman, something I heard about decades ago, and the story isn't in this book. Still, most copies of this book will be cheaper than the cover price, so you will be getting a bargain. If you are a Batman fan of a bygone era, this book will do the trick.

Introduction of the WWII Super Team!
Tho they weren't a team per se IN WWII, these are actual WWII heroes brought together as a team to fight on the homefront, while the Invaders (Cap, Torch, Namor) fought in Europe. An interesting assortment and origins to boot. We are told the really only big change is Thin Man sporting green-and-yellow for his costume instead of red-and-blue, which seemed to be the color of choice at the time (can we guess why?) Not a bad book, not a bad team. Shame they didn't catch on. Still a good story, if you get the second part, also in Marvel Premiere and the two adjoining Invaders issues.
